AI Visibility Glossary: Key Terms Explained

The vocabulary of AI visibility is young and moves fast. These are the terms that matter when you are measuring and improving how AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude describe and recommend your brand.

Definitions

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

The practice of optimizing a brand’s content and credibility signals so it appears accurately and favorably in AI-generated answers. Where traditional SEO targets ranked positions in search results, AEO targets inclusion in the single synthesized answer that platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude return.

AI Citation

A reference to a brand, product, or source inside an AI-generated answer. Citations can be explicit links to a source page or unlinked brand mentions drawn from training data and live retrieval. Citation frequency across relevant prompts is a core measure of AI visibility.

AI Perception

How AI platforms characterize a brand when they describe it: the attributes, strengths, and weaknesses they assign. AI perception can drift from a brand’s actual positioning when models rely on outdated or inaccurate third-party content, which is why it is tracked alongside citation frequency.

AI Recommendation

An AI platform’s direct suggestion of a brand or product in response to a purchase-intent question, such as “What is the best AEO platform for marketing agencies?” AI recommendations carry outsized commercial weight because the user receives a shortlist rather than a page of links to evaluate.

AI Visibility

The degree to which a brand appears in AI-generated answers across platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude for the questions its buyers actually ask. High AI visibility means being mentioned, described accurately, and recommended; low visibility means being absent while competitors fill the space.

Answer Engine

An AI system that responds to a question with a single synthesized answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity are answer engines. They compress research that once took many searches into one response, which makes inclusion in that response critical for brands.

Brand Visibility Score

A composite metric that quantifies how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers across a defined set of tracked prompts and platforms. Halogen Presence™ calculates it from scheduled prompt runs on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, so a brand can measure change over time and against competitors.

ChatGPT

OpenAI’s conversational AI assistant and the most widely used answer engine. ChatGPT answers draw on both trained knowledge and live web retrieval, and it has become a primary surface where consumers and B2B buyers ask for product recommendations and vendor comparisons.

Claude

Anthropic’s AI assistant, used heavily in professional and technical contexts. Claude has its own citation behavior and source preferences distinct from ChatGPT and Gemini, which is why platform-by-platform tracking matters: a brand can be visible on one platform and absent on another for the same question.

Competitor Tracking

Monitoring how often and how favorably competing brands appear in AI answers for the same set of prompts. Competitor tracking turns AI visibility into a relative measure — share of voice — and reveals which questions a competitor owns that a brand should be contesting.

Gemini

Google’s AI assistant. With web search enabled, Gemini grounds its answers in live retrieval, making it the answer engine most analogous to how Google AI Overviews are generated. Visibility in Gemini is a strong signal of how a brand will fare as AI features spread across Google’s search surfaces.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

A synonym for AEO used interchangeably across the industry: the discipline of improving how generative AI engines represent and recommend a brand. Both terms describe the same shift — optimizing for inclusion in generated answers rather than ranked links.

Prompt

A question or request a user poses to an AI platform. In AI visibility tracking, a prompt is a specific buyer question — like “What is the best AI SEO platform?” — that is run on a recurring schedule across platforms to record whether a brand appears in the answer.

Share of Voice (AI)

A brand’s citation frequency in AI answers relative to total brand mentions across a defined competitive set and prompt list. Share of voice shows not just whether a brand is visible, but how much of the conversation it holds compared to the competitors buyers are also hearing about.

Source Attribution

Identifying which external websites, publications, and directories an AI platform drew on when it mentioned a brand. Source attribution shows where AI visibility actually comes from, so teams can strengthen the sources doing the work and pursue high-authority sources that are not yet citing them.
